Riz Boardshorts are a company with sustainability in mind. All their shorts are made out of 100% recycled and recyclable polyester, which start life as plastic bottles or food containers that are then crushed, shredded and wound into fabric. They commissioned me to create a textile that represented their ethos. I chose a theme based on endangered species of fish in the UK waters.
The fish depicted in this piece are all species that either already receive protection under European and UK legislation or are being considered for protection by the UK government and Scottish Parliament as part of implementing the European Marine Strategy Directive, which takes an ecosystem based approach to marine management.
